‘Ben' is one sheepdog's humorous and traumatic encounters with life on the road and the struggle by his young master to re-unite them.
The book is 50 pages long and suitable to be read to children or read by the young at heart.
'Ben' was originally published with a small print-run in 1994 and is now reprinted following popular demand for the story of 'Ben' to entertain a new generation.
This latest publication has twelve wonderful illustrations by Bev Ibbotson.
All profits go directly into the FOSTBC to enable our ongoing work.
About the book
Although this story about a boy and the life of his young dog is fiction a lot of the events are fact based on experiences with my own dogs.
It is an example of what can happen, and about the powers of reasoning possible in a dog, when a bond has been formed between him and a human being.
Aimed at any young age group particular thought has been given to parents and teachers who read aloud. From my own experiences and those of friends it is often easier to read a book which has a hint of humour and plausibility about it.
About the author
Born in Yorkshire Barbara Sykes spent her early years on her parents farm on the edge of Ilkley Moor. It was from here that her love of animals developed.
Border Collies have always been a part of Barbara's life, as childhood companions on the farm to work partners and trusted friends in later years. However, she only turned to the competitive side of shepherding when Meg came into her life. Together they competed at both National and International levels of sheepdog trialling.
It was the antics and instincts of Barbara's family of sixteen Collies that inspired her to start writing. Originally written for her two children Ben is a product of imagination coupled with the breeds intelligence, instincts and incredible loyalty.
Barbara now runs Mainline Border Collie Centre with her daughter Vicki and is a founder trustee and manager of FOSTBC - The Freedom of Spirit Trust for Border Collies rescue.
