The Nile on eBay Dilemmas of Transition by Susan Baker, Petr Jehlicka
This volume explores the impact of democratization and marketization on the environment in East Central Europe.
FORMATPaperback LANGUAGEEnglish CONDITIONBrand New Publisher Description
This volume explores the impact of the twin process of democratisation and marketisation on the environment in East Central Europe. Three environmental matters are investigated: how the twin processes of change have effected (1) the physical environment (2) the expression of environmental interest and (3) the effectiveness of environmental management policies. The book also examines the role of the European Union because of the influence it exercises on environmental policy in East Central Europe. The book finds that political and economic instability and external pressures have displaced environmental considerations from central stage. This has meant a failure within East Central Europe to realise a more far-reaching and more sustainable approach towards the management of transition.

Long Description
Civil society is one of the most talked about, but difficult concepts to define. Yet it has captured the imagination of intellectuals and political activists alike. In the post-cold war era there has been a tremendous optimism about the re-emergence of civil society in many countries. However, the promises of change have not always borne fruit. This volume examines the idea of civil society in its historical and contemporary dimensions. As a collection, it provides a clear, comprehensive and critical mapping of the idea, the burden of expectation that it has carried, and the intellectual and political dimensions that surround it. The major themes covered include the concept of civil society itself, its relation to the state on the one hand and political economy on the other, and the violence of civil society as well as the possibilities it provides for resistance to injustice.
