Chapter OneFrom Heavenly Place to Humble AbodeBut the Spirit produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, humility and self-control.Galatians 5:22-23 (GNT)September 2016I can still see that temporary room after all these years; it was heavenly. Crisp white sheets and black silk flowers in the corner of each pillow, various shaped cushions all sitting under voiles draped at the head of the majestic looking bed. This resting place was extremely comfortable. It was hard to believe that I was the 'Hidden Homeless' as my suitcase lay open on the floor, making it easier to grab my clothes. Another smaller case sat propped against the radiator in that little bedroom holding all the shoes I owned. A chest of drawers acted as a place to set out all my make-up, and a bedside table housed my jewellery. My very good friend had helped me in my hour of need. I had walked away from the man I loved because he had a drink issue. It had greatly affected our relationship. God's words to me at this time were, 'Let him go, as I will never let him go.' So I obeyed, as I knew that slowly but surely it was destroying me to stay. I had travelled from Newtownards to Donaghadee in Northern Ireland in order to reach my friend's flat. She was a great help to me and a true friend in my time of trouble. So there I was at this conjuncture in my life. When people say the word 'homeless', images often flash across people's minds of an unwashed man lying on a street corner with a bottle of wine in a brown paper bag. In my lifetime I had pioneered teams onto thestreets of Belfast with a heart to 'befriend' the men and women we would find on a Friday night, sleeping rough and surviving in whatever life had thrown at them. I had witnessed homelessness from both sides of the fence, making friendships with those who had found themselves destitute. Also in my own lifetime I had been in two women's hostels and rebuilt my life after two difficult marriages. The homelessness I was experiencing this time was a different kind. It involved having a comfortable place to stay, but a lack of comfort of not knowing what the future held and experiencing my whole world turned upside down. The first few days were very tearful as I let go of the man I loved. I had felt pushed to extremes; experiences such as sleep deprivation and dealing with a contention only drink conjures up and the pain of watching the man I loved destroy himself with vodka. The reality was he carried his own set of reasons for drinking and I came to understand that only he could work that out with the help of a good counsellor and trust in God. Without drink he was this warm and caring man. In the evenings when I sat with him I would nestle into his arms and his heat emanated a security I had craved for all my life. After everything I had encountered in my life, I gravitated towards him, thankful for that warmth. God had healed away past pain but with this man his sense of humour always kept me alive, disallowing me to slip into depressions I had once known before God's healing touch.
