Author Biography
Jack Smith born 1924, was brought up in Kendal, Westmorland. Educated at Kendal Grammar School he was awarded a senior scholarship to Magdalin College Oxford. At oxford he read chemistry. When he had taken his degree he enjoyed 14 successful years as Head of Science at King's College School, Wimbledon. He developed an interest in the use of film and television for science teaching. In 1962 he joined the new Granada Television Company in Manchester. He then spent 26 years as Head of Educational Television with Granada. He himself made over 100 scientific films, gaining several awards. He retired in 1988 and since then has indulged in his hobby of photographing wild plants and in natural history generally. He has published a book on spiders for children and contributed to the yet unpublished new Flora of South Lancashire. He is married with two daughters and four grandchildren and says how lucky he has been in their companionship and encouragement.
