Treaties Versus the Constitution
by Roger Lea MacBride
published in 1955 by the Constitution and Free Enterprise Foundation
This hard-to-find book analyzes the dangers that international treaties pose to
the integrity of the U.S. Constitution, and to the autonomy of the United States.
Anyone who has followed the attempts by certain factions to use the
United Nations to create treaties that would, if signed, override basic
freedoms guaranteed in the Bill of Rights, will appreciate the importance
of this book, and how prescient MacBride was in writing it sixty years ago.
Roger MacBride (1929-1995) was one of the leading figures in the
creation of the modern libertarian movement in the United States.
As a member of the electoral college in 1972, MacBride cast the first ever
electoral vote for a Libertarian Party presidential candidate (John Hospers).
This vote also gave the Libertarian Party vice-presidential candidate that
year, Toni Nathan, the distinction of being the first woman in American
history to receive an electoral vote.
MacBride was elected to the Virginia House of Representatives in 1962.
In 1976, he became the Libertarian Party presidential candidate, and
received 172,557 votes (more than 40 times as many votes than the
Libertarian Party candidate had received in the 1972 presidential election).
MacBride was the heir of the noted libertarian writer Rose Wilder Lane,
the woman who co-wrote (with her mother, Laura Ingalls Wilder) the
famous LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE series of novels. MacBride
helped to create the popular television series that was based on the
books, and later wrote many novels that extended the series, including
Little House on Rocky Ridge, Little Town in the Ozarks, On the
Banks of the Bayou, and several others. MacBride was also the author
of A New Dawn For America: The Libertarian Challenge.
