This study is an exploration of several of thefactors that have often been used to understand whythe Rwandan genocide occurred in 1994. Whileprevious studies have pointed to deep rooted ethnicrivalries and tribal hatreds, the role of theRwandan media, and psychological factors, this studymakes the argument that the collapse of the economywas the most significant factor that contributed tothe massacre of nearly one million persons over ahundred day period. The study concludes that ethnic rivalries set inplace by European colonizers and the role of theradio, while factors, cannot explain theenthusiastic fervor in which the genocide wascarried out by many Hutu peasant farmers. Instead, relying on World Bank data and post-genocideinterviews, this study concludes that the singlemost significant factor in explaining why so manyordinary Hutu citizens passionately engaged in themurder of their Tutsi neighbors, friends, acquaintances, and family members was the drasticeconomic decline that left so many uneducated, unemployed, and hopeless.
