THE DEATH OF AN ARMY THE BATTLE OF NASHVILLE AND HOOD’S RETREAT BY PAUL H. STOCKDALE EDITED BY JOHN McGLONE SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR FIRST EDITION LIMITED EDITION – NUMBER 416 OF ONLY 1000 PRINTED FINE CONDITION Original, Clean, Tight, Paperback Book Contains 13 Photographs and Portraits, an Appendix and Several Biographical Sketches of Key Leaders Referenced and Indexed; Contains a Bibliography PUBLISHED BY THE SOUTHERN HERITAGE PRESS, STACKPOLE PRESS, IN 1992 COMES WITH A LETTER FROM STACKPOLE PRESS “The Death of An Army fills a gap in Confederate history – a clear eyewitness account of the Battle of Nashville and, for the first time, a good history of the terrible aftermath. This book should be on the shelf of any library, historian or serious student of The Army of the Tennessee and the war in the West.” – Dr. John McGlone, Editor, Journal of Confederate History This limited edition, first edition book is signed and inscribed by the author. The book is, in effect, an eyewitness account of the aftermath of The Battle of Franklin, the advance on Nashville, the disastrous Battle of Nashville and the long retreat afterward. Mr. Stockdale has skillfully allowed the participants - both blue and gray - to speak for themselves. While this makes for exciting reading Stockdale, has also made a solid contribution to Confederate historiography by filling in those months from the Battle of Nashville until the final surrender. Most histories simply make a transition from Hood's defeat to the surrender in North Carolina. After Nashville, Forrest led the rear guard, and those who fought and died along the way added laurels, even in defeat, to an army already crowned in glory. This limited edition, first edition book is signed and inscribed by the author. Only 1000 copies of this book were printed; this is copy 416. The book in excellent condition. It is clean and tight.
