First published in 1643 by the Westminster Assembly of Divines, this historical confession of faith is one element of the larger Confessional Standards that were intended to safeguard the Church's doctrinal purity. The Confessions were authorized and ratified by Parliament, and became foundational documents for Presbyterian denominations throughout the world. This edition includes an introduction and notes on the original text by John Macpherson, who was minister of St. Peter's Free Church in Edinburgh and a leading figure in Scottish church politics at that time. The editors have done their best to bring out its meaning in modern terms, showing its relevance for life today.
